Williams Avenue left-side bike lane plan in chaos

Already there are signs that something bad's going to happen on the new, improved hipster highway they're planning for Williams Avenue in Portland. Why not just leave it the way it is now?

Another area added to the list to avoid venturing into at all costs, business or otherwise... unless you're on a bike, of course.

Eventually won't this kind of planning lead to cyclists living in segregated communities?

Something needs to change on Williams Avenue. I ride the bus everyday and everyday we end up having to sit and wait for all the bikes to pass so the bus can pull to the curb to pick up passengers, to off-load a wheelchair, etc. And the bikes do not yield to people getting off the bus if the driver is not able to pull over. It is crazy to have the bike lane on the same side as the bus. And don't even get me started on the number of cars and bikes who feel it is okay to make a right turn in front of a bus that is pulling away from the curb.

Maybe the solution is to put the cyclists and the bus on different streets.

You should read the comment thread at Bike Portland on this topic. Those folks hate these new changes with a white hot passion. They also agree that doing nothing is better than the proposed changes.

It seems to me that unless the city is willing to eliminate street parking on at least one side, then they should just keep the lane the way it is.

Here's a crazy idea: why don't we have our streets designed by sober transportation engineers instead of untrained bicycle evangelists?

Why can't they just make N. Rodney (and possibly a portion of N. Cleveland) a bike way or green street...or whatever they call them? The idea of putting bicyclists on main roads is just plain dumb.

SPLAT!!!...B-bump...B-bump!

Bingo!
That's exactly why I've concluded that Portland leadership is insane or sadistic, especially when there is such a dense, small grid of side streets, free of dust, free of vehicles, free of exhaust, and largely free of traffic signals.

A local friend of mine who frequently vacations with his family in The Netherlands where they almost exclusively bike while there has said the same thing.

You almost have to wonder if Portland leaders weren't wanting cyclists to martyr themselves under the wheels of a delivery truck.

Should be interesting to see what happens when the New Seasons opens and cars are constantly turning left off of Williams to get into the parking lot.
