Much ado...
We yawned our way through last year's debate over whether the Portland police should join the feds in the Joint Terrorism Task Force. In the end, the powers that be came up with a bit of a hash -- Portland's neither in it nor out of it.
But if there's one thing the current arrangements produce, it's paperwork. Yesterday the public received written reports from both the mayor and from the police chief about recent goings-on with the task force. And -- surprise -- there's not much content in either of the documents.
But hey, the mayor's applied for his "secret" clearance from the FBI, and he's still waiting to hear from them. It could be a while.

How about we have another contest, Jack - will Sam receive his FBI clearance before the counter to the left drops to zero? I vote "no".

Given Adams' personal behavior, and personal finances, I can't imagine why he'd have a problem getting a security clearance...

Clearances with the feds are funny things.
The first part of the theory about "clearances" is that they look for any hidden "bad" information which, if possessed by "The Other Guys", could be used to blackmail a person into revealing "secret" data.
With Sam, I don't think there are any things about him which are both bad and hidden. Everybody knows what a s**t he is and what his unsavory past behaviors have been.
In that sense, Hizzoner should pass that part of the clearance process with flying colors.
Its the other parts of the clearance process that might trip him (and a lot of other elected pols) up. Is the subject habitually truthful, and can he be relied upon to do what he says, and say what he does, without deception, prevarication, and his own agendas. Might be a problem there for Hizzoner.
And "secret" and "Top Secret" are just the bare basics, having to do with the the second and third lowest classifications of data. There are a lot of other "levels" of data classification, and then additional classifications based upon the data sources. Whole additional set of hoops if a person gets access to data based upon reading the other side's communications traffic (sigint); another set of hoops based upon whether the data is based upon reports of an informant (humint); other hoops if the data comes from visual reconaisance (think "spy satelites" that take pictures;. And then all the data is supposed to be compartmentalized., so that only those with a "need to know" get to access it.

Hey, I'd rather have them keeping track of who pays cash for their coffee than shooting unarmed mentally ill people in the back or arresting peaceful bystanders after the Black Bloc runs away.
