If I understand this line of reasoning, since I am in opposition to the statist regime in Washington DC, where tens of thousands of unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats are leveraging the police power of the state to dictate how we must lead our lives, the only legitimate and moral response, free from critcism, would be to martyr myself to the cause. I get it.

And Pope Francis is at odds with the current Pres of Argentina, and has been for some time as well, over the issues of birth control and gay rights.
I think he is no saint, even if he did name himself after one.
