UPDATE, 6:48 a.m.: More details here and here. If something like this can cause this much damage, shouldn't we have robots warning us before it hits? Maybe Tri-Met can put something on the buses to track these objects.

Then there's the asteroid that's going by earth today. Astronomers say it will miss by 17,000 miles - about as much as a Dwight Howard free throw.

Watching some of the video made me wonder if something like this had happened 50 years ago during the Cold War could it have triggered a nuclear missile strike.
