Freaky NFL tie sends fans to calculators
The Rams and 49ers played to a tie today -- neither team scored in the single overtime period that's allowed in regular season games -- and so each gets a rare digit in the tie column of its record. Interestingly, in computing the teams' won-loss percentages, the league counts the game as a half-win. And so for the Niners, who are now 6-2-1, the official NFL standings page shows a won-loss percentage of .722, which is 6.5 out of 9. The lowly Rams, who are now 3-5-1, are at .389, which is 3.5 out of 9. For a team with a winning record, the tie lowers their percentage, and for a team with a losing record, it increases it. For a team right at .500, the tie maintains the status quo.
It makes sense. The Niners are now behind a team that's 7-2 (.779), but ahead of a team that's 6-3 (.667) -- exactly halfway between the two. The Rams are behind 4-5 (.444), but ahead of 3-6 (.333), also right in the middle.

Big fat bummer for the Niners. If they still make the playoffs, they're likely to be on the road for the final two games now - maybe even traveling to NY as a wild-card team to play the Giants because the Seahawks could take the division. Too early to tell yet, though, but that specter looms now. Harbaugh must be having a fit tonight. And they play the Bears next Monday night. They'll be lucky to end up 9-6-1.
Still, concern for Alex Smith....not a good day for him. Hopefully, he'll recover soon, without any lasting, ill effects:

Excerpt:
This is Smith's second concussion in two years: He had one in a loss to Dallas in the second week of the 2011 season.
On the 49ers' third drive of the game, Smith took a beating.
Though most observers assumed that he was injured on the wallop delivered by Rams linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar at the end of the first quarter, Harbaugh said the concussion actually occurred on the 4th-and-short quarterback sneak at midfield. Already trailing by 14 points, the decision to go for it was a sign of how desperate things were becoming for the 49ers. Smith plunged into the pile, getting the first down by an eyelash and, six plays later, threw for a touchdown.
Smith then reported that his vision was blurry. Just before the offense was to go back on the field, Kaepernick was told he was going into the game. Harbaugh, who looked bewildered by the day's events, said he thought Kaepernick did a "very good job."

Arithmetic lessons for pigskin heads. Too funny. Yet too hard for Lars.
