Hales pulling in bucks from the 'Couv

This one's pretty funny. Portland mayoral candidate Charlie "Streetcar" Hales, his campaign damaged by the revelation that he voted in Oregon while claiming Washington residency for tax purposes, is now raking in many thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Clark County, Washington. Here are a few recent entries on his Orestar money page:

$25,000
David Nierenberg
19605 NE 8th St Camas WA 98607
Investor
Nierenberg Investments Management Co, Inc. Vancouver WA

$5,000
Candace Young
1708 NW 79th Circle Vancouver WA 98665
Psychologist
Self Employed

$1,000
Kevin McFall
14207 NE 82nd Ave Vancouver WA 98662
Civil Engineer
Stacy and Witbeck, Inc Portland OR

Not only did Hales enjoy avoiding Oregon taxes, but he apparently doesn't mind spending money that hasn't been subject to any income tax, federal or state -- like the investment income of Washingtonians.

...so that means the max will be built to vancouver if he's elected?

Stacy and Witbeck - the general contractor who's made a specialty of building Portland's pet rail projects.

And the best he can do is a measly grand?

"max will be built to vancouver"

Truism of the year. Hales was a streetcar sales guy, that goes wothout saying.

I'm trying to figure out what Nierenberg gets out of it. He's more of a venture capital guy.

Maybe they're paying him to stay away? Because if he doesn't make it as mayor here, he might try for mayor there.

That's what you guys get? I'm riveted on a Shrink that kicks in 5 grand. Wow, is it kickback for therapy? Is he getting a step up on Wu?

It's not about psychology, dman... she's on the board of the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington with David Nierenberg, the big $25K donor. But I imagine it's just a coincidence - everything's fine - nothing to look into there. I'm sure the max alignment will be decided on objectively-neutral considerations, and not on where certain donors and their friends own property.

Thanks Sal. So just another Nurse Amanda enabler.
