One peculiar fact about cruise ships that's immediately obvious once on board is that 90% of the staff is from eastern Europe.
No cruise line, as far as I am aware, is regulated by US labor/environmental/etc laws, as they are registered in the Bahamas, etc.
I recall reading about some virulent bacteria on-board one of the cruise ships... but the passengers couldn't do much, as they mistakenly assumed that US laws granted them, e.g., the ability to demand immediate evacuation of the ship.
I do feel sorry for the lady that crashed into the column though. That had to hurt!
Most people think that nothing bad can happen on a big ship! Mighty mother ocean usually wins!
