A horrible scene just south of San Francisco. An exploded gas main, apparently.

The suggestion -- in an early AP report -- that a small plane engine was heard sputtering overhead has been dropped. Explanation is focused on infrastructure and citizens' failure to report the smell of gas prior to the explosion.
