Cha-ching! $7 million for new red light cams in Portland
But get this -- they aren't going in new locations. They're just going to take take clearer pictures in the current locations.
The city says it makes less than $10,000 a year profit on this program. Somebody else must really be cashing in. Has somebody's nephew got the contract on this one?

So these cams don't make any money and cost $7 million dollars. And some traffic engineers suggest that simply delaying the green at these intersections would achieve the safety component. And I'm pretty sure if you asked 100 Portlanders if they supported the continued use of them that 90 would say no.
So who is supporting these?!!

Absolutely outrageous waste of money. Now people won't have so much fun tacking up blurred ticket-pics on the fridge, because all that clarity will make them look so ugly.
I vote we spend 7 million dollars on micro video-surveillance systems that can be sewn into the PPD uniforms to keep tabs on them, pulling their guns on people and so forth.
I wish there were a tape of the drunk up on Hoyt arboretum, so people could have a clearer idea of how virtually incapacitated i suspect that individual was. Then maybe the PPD would start a new policy, involving red capes and bullfighter uniforms, to control the punch-drunk elements out there, without feeling compelled to shoot a round of bullets to pacify them.
Long live the Salem police department!

Studies have been done that say two things. One, increasing the yellow light by 2 seconds greatly decreases the red light runners. Two, red light cameras increase the rear end accidents as people slam on their breaks.
These things are all about making money for the city putting them in and the company pushing them as a good policing tool.

I think most folks resent being spied upon. It's one thing to get caught by a cop keeping watch, but quite another to be captured by technology attempting to guide mankind for the good of mankind. Too reminiscent of the movie "Hal"

These red light cameras have been abused regularly around the US by local government and the private companies that operate them.
There's a monetary incentive to do so (i.e. tweak the yellow light timing).
Based on the link, the safety-first soccer moms on the KGW link seem to like these things.
I for one slam on my brakes on close yellows on photo radar intersections.

11 cameras for less than $1000/yr profit at about $300 ticket for running a red light.
My guess - Randy's nephew.

You guys asking about which family member got the contract are on the right track.
Of course, it could be somebody's sweetheart, too.
Or mentee. *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

Is this one of those public/private things where we the public pay the $7 million? The article said the city makes less than $10,000. . so why are paying $7 million?
Gaye Harris comment: . . .I vote we spend 7 million dollars on micro video-surveillance systems that can be sewn into the PPD uniforms to keep tabs on them, pulling their guns on people and so forth. . . .
I would vote to spend the million on micro video-surveillance systems on our city council!!
