Our home, cont'd
Is there anything better than a local band playing in an Oregon roadhouse? Locals gyrating around, small-scale drama all over, the cold summer beer flowing. Then they launch into "Little Wing" or John Hiatt's "Icy Blue Heart" and you know right away, this ain't bad. For tonight or any night.

Sounds like fun.
Beats $15 apple-nectarine-jasmine-chai-tinis at some joint in the pearl whose name begins with Le.

Ahhh, "Little Wing," one of my favorites. I've got Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn's versions on my iPhone. Beautiful.

Winding up our last day in New Orleans, and last night saw Little Freddie King at DBA, our 6th (or maybe 7th...easy to lose count here) night of incredible music, diverse crowds (race, age, socioeconomic), amazing friendly folks, and really cheap booze.
Danced about 15 blocks with a second line parade celebrating Louis Armstrong this morning, about half in the kind of open faucet rain we never see, a cold Heineken bought from a guy wheeling a cooler along the street.
So, much as I love my hometown, there's nothing in Portland that compares. And it's even been cooler here this last week.
