Fisti-cuffs

Fight fans are having a big night in the Rose Garden tonight. So are the Portland police -- there are seven empty cop cruisers parked outside.

I have a friend who works security for the Rose Quarter and she told me that they always have issues during and especially after the MMA/UFC type events. Fans get jacked up and wants to brawl after the matches. Pretty pathetic. Hopefully the Rose Quarter has to pay for the extra police but some how I doubt it.

I personally don't see the appeal of UFC/MMA at all...2 people just beating the crap out of each other for sport? Pretty dumb in my book.

I was there. The crowd was fine. There was as much extra-cirricular activity as any show I've been to there. But of course MMA is a passion of the lower classes, so it gets seven empty cruisers. Nine Inch Nails or Dave Matthews, where the alcohol and jack-assery are in just as much supply? Not so much.

I'm assuming the police to whom the cruisers belong were inside the arena. Did you see them around?

Arena security was everywhere and did a great job. Thanks to connections, I was in a VIP section in the lower level and didn't sit among the hoi polloi, so the few incidents I saw were a distance away. Security handled all quickly and professionally. The only blue uniforms I saw inside belonged to the Marine recruiters in a booth on the concourse. Wish I would have walked around a little more, but then I would have missed the undercard.

I usually count at least four or five Police Cruisers when I arrive early for Blazer games. Hardly a rowdy crowd unless you're dumb enough to wear a Lakers Jersey to the game and irritate Blazer fans.

The arena hired several police officers to supplement regular security both inside and outside. They do the same for Blazer games, etc. Arena security does a great job keeping the lid on inside the venue.

There were quite a few scuffles outside after the event, and the police presence was increased accordingly for a short time. All the people in the street and the difficulty of getting backup into parking garages and such requires more officers in closer proximity to each other.
