More signs of life in Salem
It looks as though the Oregon State Senate has seen the error of its ways and voted to repeal the hideous law that we complained about here. Now it's time for the House to do the same, and for Governor Ted to sign the bill into law. Misguided and probably unconstitutional, the restrictions on party members' nominating independent candidates need a speedy interment.

It was hideous to begin with, indeed. What gets my goat is how history is being distorted: an Oregonian editorial the other day (yesterday?) stated that the law was aimed at stopping Republicans from signing Ralph Nader's petition for candidacy at his nominating convention held at Benson High School in July 2004; it failed to mention that Democrats packed the house and then refused to sign, leaving Nader short of the signatures he needed.
I quit the Democratic Party briefly in 2006 too; when I think back on that incident, I sometimes wonder why I came back, although so far, I am pleased with President Obama, but more as an intelligent leader than as a party member.
