What she said
Here's the Multnomah County counsel's opinion that we alluded to the other day -- the one that says that in order to be sheriff, a candidate must be an experienced law enforcement officer. As we noted and as the opinion itself acknowledges, other legal minds disagree -- including one of the county's own deputy district attorneys.

This is divine intervention. The 74 yr old former professor said: "If they say no, then I'll stay a park ranger.... It's one of the greatest jobs in the U.S." Trust me, keep your Smokey Bear hat on. Even if you win.

I also think the next Mult Co. Sheriff will have a really tough time. Don't get me wrong, being a Sheriff in Oregon sounds like a very satisfying occupation, just not in a dysfunctional county.
A new Sheriff here may be able to make a few improvements, but he/she probably won't be able to fix much still lacking support from the commissioners.
Huge jail issues such as sufficient overall funding, opening the (4 yrs old) new facility, inmate safety, costs for inmate medication, UNION issues, and the rest of it are going to give the next head honcho fits. I agree with genop that the professor should keep the smokey hat on. He has probably lived to be 74 years old by staying away from occupations like this.

Agnes Sowles, isn't she the brilliant legal mind that stated homosexual marriages are legal? Until the Supreme Court disagreed?
