Enough is enough
Everyone expected The New York Times to be a little ga-ga in its coverage of the All-Star Game at the soon-to-be-demolished Yankee Stadium. But I think they took it a little too far in this morning's paper:

Outrageous. Giving short shrift to the only New York ballclub winning games around here. I agree...enough.

They did a "we love Willie Randolph" piece, too. But it sure looks like he was holding the Mets back, doesn't it?

Meet the Yanks, meet the Yanks,
Step right up and greet the Yanks.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Yanks are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the Y-A-N-K-S, Yanks, of New York town.
It's a freaken sacrilege, I tell you. That's what it is: a freaken sacrilege

This is just par for the course as the paper always favors the Yanks over the Mets. Then again sports coverage isn't exactly what we read the NYT for.

Willie was definitely no Gil Hodges or Davey Johnson and, I think if a Mets manager is going to accrue such a losing record, he needs to be at least a tenth as loveable as Casey Stengel.

Agreed. But here's another melody to soothe your soul. (Ready? ¾ time):
Oom-pa-pah Oom-pa-pah
My beer is Rheingold, the dry beer
Look for Rheingold whenever you buy beer
It's not bitter, not sweet,
It's the extra dry treat
Won't you try extra dry Rheingold beer?

Ah, if youth was squandered at least it was squandered with containers of Rheinegold.
But then, one of my earliest memories is of sitting in my Uncle's bar and rigging as many votes as possible for my favorite (always a blonde) Miss Rheinegold contestant. Not that she ever won.
