Dave's not here

While we were out of town, a letter came to the house informing us that our refuse carrier had been sold. Dave's Sanitary, the outfit that's been picking up our trash and recycling for the last eight and a half years, is no longer. Dave and Pauline Weir, of Vancouver, Washington, were in the garbage business for more than 35 years. They sold their outfit to the Heiberg brothers, whose family has been at it in the Rose City for more than 60 years. Starting tomorrow morning, the new guys will take custody of the contents of our can and recycling bins.

I've been impressed by Dave's operation. It was always first rate. The gal who answered the phone up there was one of the most polite, cheerful, and helpful customer service people that I've ever dealt with. To those who aren't moving over to the new ownership, a heartfelt thanks.

You're pretty lucky, I think. Over here in Nob Hill we're "serviced" by a branch of the Soprano family, I think.

I have found a similar experience with the off-the-charts friendly and helpful service from my Portland area garbage haulers. I had Lehl Disposal Co. for 20 years and because I moved,I now have Troudt Brothers Sanitary and Recycling Service. If other local businesses took a clue from these folks about how to treat customers (even customers who really have no choice which franchise hauls off their trash), they'd be a lot better off.

I wonder if Brad is still working...I was one of his first customers when he was of outlaw status. A nicer guy never lived.

Oh, be careful, Alan, with voicing your dissatisfaction...or you may get "double your garbage back!"

Speaking of Nob Hill garbage service, the worst thing I've found about living in the area is being woke up at four or five in the morning by the loud clanking and rolling of dumpsters. The various garbage services come by a couple times a week and as early as 3:50am. As someone that tries to sleep between 12:30am and 7:30am, I find this fairly disruptive. Isn't this some sort of noise violation?

You're fortunate. The general trend in the industry has been that the small, local haulers get bought out by a corporate entity - e.g. my hauler is Waste Management, run from Houston, operated from Scottsdale.

I had Heiberg for several years when I had a house in Laurelhurst and they were about the best garbage haulers I've used, so you should have the same quality. There are some other independents that are not that good, even worse that Waste Mgt.
