It's too late, baby, now, it's too late

This just in from the Portland School District:

Portland Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 16, as snow continues to fall steadily in the school district.

Day care centers on PPS campuses are open.

In some cases, such as high schools, students may already have arrived. Employees at the schools will remain with the students until they can be safely returned home and the school closed.

Uh oh, they'll be hearing about the high schoolers who had to trudge through the snow twice, in both directions. You made the call a little late, Super Vicki! And so in some folks' eyes, you're gonna be 0 for 2.

Love the header graphic :)

Bad planning by PPS. At least go to a 2 hour delay once the snow starts falling to buy yourself some time--that way, when you actually do shut the schools, you don't have people en route. I agree, Jack--Vickie is now 0 for 2.

Big controversy in Camas (where I 8-5 it) as well. The superintendent here called a snow day after kids were already in school. Parents are more than a little upset as they now have to leave the office to make alternate arrangements for the day.

Definitely 0 for 2. I would have been at the bus stop waiting except I decided to drive the kids to school this morning just in case school was cancelled.

These things are so easy to criticize with hindsight. I remember a winter, probably 1978 or 1979, when we were living out near Lewis & Clark College, and our immediate neighbor's teenage daughter, waiting for a bus on highway 43 (at the Breyman Ave. light) to go to school, was struck and killed by, I think, a Tri-Met bus that slid in the icy conditions. It's a difficult decision whether to hold school and set a lot of traffic in motion. Improved communications today are helpful, but weather forecasting seems to be as error-prone as ever.

With snow a wave of preservation hits the PDC. They are now considering restoration of several street cars line, especially the one's heading east.

"...as error prone as ever." I couldn't agree more Allen. Despite the proliferation of satellite coverage and super computers it sure doesn't seem like we've seen a big improvement in the accuracy rate in the last decade or two. I suspect Ted Williams had a better average than what we're seeing from the media's forecasters. Maybe they're not paid enough.

Hilarious. I moved here from New Hampshire last year, and in NH this amount of snow barely even gets mentioned in the news, let alone force schools to cancel.

There's the kinds of lies, in Portland:

- Lies.
- Damned lies.
- Statistics.
- Snow forecasts.

Also, in Portland, a "pack of lies" = development deal.

Turbo sez: Hilarious. I moved here from New Hampshire last year, and in NH this amount of snow barely even gets mentioned in the news, let alone force schools to cancel.

Yeah, well, it's the folks who moved here from points south with the delusion that four -wheel drive makes you impervious to weather conditions that trap even the best trained and most experienced snow drivers. And there, you're probably outnumbered 20 to 1.

The forecasters are LIARS???

Did Bush put them up to this?

She's now EARLY - PS are all closed tomorrow.

Guess she took the criticism to heart!

Officials said there were 35 sledding related injuries at local hospitals as of Tuesday night.

Good thing those kids were stuck inside a classroom all day long.

Their called "chains" people. You don't need a fancy AWD $50,000 Volvo or whatever to drive in this stuff. My '85 Volks Vanagon with posi-trac did great with a set of chains and keeping it under 25 MPH. Give yourself an extra half-hour and it's all good.

With that stated, I have to admit to the guilty pleasure of a few snow days here and there. I know my kids had a blast, and yes Mr. T, I am grateful that there are no sledding injuries to speak of at this point thanks in part to divine provenance and surplus combat helmets.
