My favorite "Stairway" of all time is the madcap blend of "Stairway" and "Theme from Gilligan's Island" recorded in the mid-'70s by a Bay Area band, Little Roger and the Goosebumps. The first time I heard it (which was a live performance in Davis), I laughed so hard I cried.
As an alumnus of UM, I have to agree that "Stairway" is one of the most ridiculous performances in their repertoire. They've been doing it for years now and I don't know anyone who enjoys it.
Of course, the band played pretty well compared to the football team.
I loved it, it had that rare combination of out of tune trumpets and a lackluster undercoating of muddy bottom that reminds me of a bag of sh*t stained through a colander of mouse dung.

You're right, it stunk, though the Oklahoma marching band just played an upbeat version of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"
