Here we go

As long-time readers of this blog know, the holidays wipe me out. By New Year's Day, I'm typically a weeping, emotional basket case. Noticing this a while back, I have it on my to-do list to get some quiet domestic time in around mid-November, when the craziness starts.

Too late this year. The madness has already begun.

Now, I'm not talking about the idiotic Portland radio station that's been playing nonstop Christmas music for a week or more. That's so absurd that it has no effect. No, I'm talking about the stuffing that the calendar's getting: two birthday parties and two other social functions this weekend; the quarterly poker game (with recovery day following) next weekend; then Thanksgiving, of course; likely visits from both of the kids' grandmas in succession; a visit to Santa somewhere in there; the whole shopping and shipping thing; and who knows what on Christmas itself. And that's just what we know about already. It's only November 13.

I'm practicing my deep breathing already. Wish me luck this year, and I'll do the same for you.

So . . .

. . . start a tradition like an off-season Rose Festival Medallion thing.

I think there are two stations that are playing it nonstop already.

My favorite Holiday event last year was watching two uptight Biblical scholars on Cable Access, discussing how Christmas was a pagan ritual that had nothing to do with Christianity, adding that Christians who celebrated it were imperiling their souls. Finally, somebody gets it!

ok, so my question is - if I'm not christian, but i like the whole holiday season, am I imperiling my soul by celebrating?

I don't think I could imperil my soul any more but I hope so.

I gave up celebrating Christmas a few years ago in any 'official' capacity- and yet, the season still wipes me out.

I think bears have the right idea. Go somewhere now and hibernate, skip the Holidays, and get up when the rain kind of lets up.

Last year I read David Sedaris' book of short stories: Holidays on Ice. Some of the stories are so funny that they help offset the angst.
