Fighting back
I've been bombarded the last few days by comment spam from some jerk who's giving e-mail addresses from "sexmuch.com." This genius has figured out how to spoof IP addresses, but I believe I've tracked down a way to get rid of him or her other than IP banning. I've installed the MT Blacklist software, which was easy to do compared to getting started with MT. Here's hoping that chases that noisy vermin for good.

Same here. Dealing with comment spam has become a major headache.

It's like e-mail spam, only in comments on a blog. James, if you haven't already, get the MT Blacklist software installed within your MT setup. It's easy. Then you'll just need to update the blacklist now and then.

I also see you're still running Movable Type 2.64. If you upgrade to 2.66—it's pretty simple, you download a patch and it'll walk you through replacing three old files with three new versions—one of the improvements is a comments "throttle": you can't post comments faster than one every three seconds, or something. Prevents the mass dumping by bots that comments spammers like to do. Between that, and MT Blacklist's ability to block based on URLs they're trying to link to, you can cut the comments spam pretty much to nil.
