CRoCk mystery billboard came from "Portland Creep" people
This morning's Willy Weed ferrets out who put up that wonderful I-5 billboard denouncing the Interstate Bridge light rail project as "corruption":
The billboard was purchased by Lindsay Berschauer, a Republican consultant and ex-director of the Oregon Transformation Project, which last year backed Clackamas County candidates opposed to light rail with big contributions from Stimson Lumber (“The King of Clackistan,” WW, Oct. 31, 2012). Berschauer tells WW her firm, Leona Consulting, has been hired to fight the CRC but won’t say by whom. Meanwhile, Stimson Lumber CEO Andrew Miller tells WW neither he nor Stimson was involved in financing the billboard.Note to readers: The billboard’s photos of McCaig and Wheeler originally appeared in WW, which holds rights to the photos, and were used without WW’s permission or knowledge. Editor Mark Zusman has asked Berschauer to remove the photos. Berschauer has declined to do so.
A little touch of Clackistan brightens up the day.

No mention of the Coast Guard's response to the bridge application? It seems like they aren't going to just let the new lower height limit slip by. (Or they have some consultant friends that needed some work...)

Someone will get to the Coast Guard and they'll go away. The Goldschmidt People have Earl the Pearl working on it. Probably Wyden, too.

Still not sure why they put Wheeler on that thing when there are so many prominent politicians who have done far heavier lifting on getting the CRC through the process. Wheeler has actually voiced some skepticism on the funding mechanisms. Of course, it's possible that having him on there is just maneuvering ahead of his campaign for governor in the next cycle--that's my guess.

Yeah Coast Guard! I knew they would save us!
I liked the billboard until I heard that WW and the photographer were ripped off. The Repubs are always getting in trouble for using music without paying BMI/ASCAP. Here, they steal photos. Tacky, tacky.
Pro-business, yet they steal intangible property? Don't get it. Willamette Week gets good photographers and pays them for their work. The photographer took copyrighted pictures and authorized them for particular uses by WW. The photographer(s) have every right NOT to have their images stolen. How do photographers pay their electric bills, Mr. Bershauer? The copyright owners should sue.

Berschauer is a she, not a he.
It will be interesting to see if anything comes of the copyright issue.

Couldn't WW sue Ms. Berschauer for
the average fee for use of a photo on a billboard?
It would be nice if WW could strike a blow for photographers (and musicians) by suing for compensation.

Journalists love a good cat fight. Oh wait a minute...that would mean they'd need to report both sides.

Jack,
Photographers at WW were unaware of any contract stating that WW has Oregon rights to their printed photos. It seems to be a mystery to many. I have requested copies of the contracts directly from WW. So far, they have provided no indication that they, in fact, have written, signed contracts with their photographers that give them sole rights to use those photos in Oregon.
I have stated to WW that once I see such documentation, I will act accordingly.

Lindsay,
Are you saying that you got permission from the photographer to use the pictures?
Posted by Michael | March 13, 2013 4:38 PM
Ms. Berschauer:
If WW does not have the rights to use the photos for billboards, then the rights would belong to the photographers themselves or an agency.
Who did you contact for permission to use the photos prior to putting them on the billboard?

I personally experienced the unethical Mark Zusman when he failed to reprimand an employee at the Williamette Week for running around verbally defaming my character claiming I was a liar and my story was a lie that was going to press. I should mention this employee worked in the same "field" of work as myself. A co-worker of his phoned me to reveal what was being done behind my back- I mailed documented proof and receipts that proved my story to be true and explained what this Williamette Week employee was doing to my career and business unethically, and illegally. He responded by standing by his "employee". Portland is run scammers that will have to be screwed into the ground when they die because they are so crooked. Every dog has their day.

My guess? They're putting Wheeler in the ads because they think he's going to run for Governor and they hope to start muddying up the waters.

Clackistan has a certain ring to it.
What would it be called if the Portland citizens revved up too?
