“The mayor of Portland (Kyle MacLachlan) disappears, and through a temp agency, she fills in as mayor,” teases series co-creator/star Fred Armisen of her two-episode stint, which airs on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1. “She does things in the most efficient way. Because the character didn’t grow up in Portland, she doesn’t have the same understanding of how things go. She’s more like, ‘Look, this is a city, so we have to do those things that cities do.’ We wanted an outsider to come in and say, ‘What is this place?’”
Agreed, Molly. I could very easily see a skit where she gets the city running properly, pays down the debt, and amps up the local economy. She's then promptly ridden out of town on a rail, after being tarred and feathered, because she didn't make sure the workers paving the streets weren't offered vegan lunches.
At least Mildred knew bureau budgets better than most of the bureau's staff. Today's budgets probably have her spinning so fast she could generate more power than Vestas.
You had me reminiscing about Mildred...she was IMO a woman to be emulated; even if she did dress like my Grandmother..
"As a city commissioner, including the time when she was in charge of the Police and Fire bureaus, Schwab enjoyed considerable public popularity for her informal, flamboyant manner and quick wit. But at City Hall, she had a reputation for being temperamental, unpredictable, and disruptive and for not hesitating to publicly criticize fellow politicians and city staff members or to derail a colleague's proposal."

She does resemble Vera Katz a little.

Sorry, she doesn't look like a bike-riding hipster. Bad casting.

Maybe she can sing the Star Spangled Banner before City Council meetings.

Now THAT could be really funny.

She's no Mildred Schwab or Connie McCready!

I gotta quit reading without my specs.
I thought Jack's headline tease said, "Roseanne Barr PLAYED by the Mayor".
Which oddly has TWO meanings.
MY reply was going to be, "We have ALL been played by the Mayor". But that doesn't mean Sam wouldn't make a terrific Roseanne.

Was Schwab ever mayor?
I must have missed it...

Mildred had a sense of fashion style in mind of Amanda Fritz and that is where the similarities end.

Eat your heart out, Portlandia. I got there first.
Roseanne's on the list of comedians who've delivered one of my jokes on TV. Afterwards she said, "That's a good one."

At least after singing the anthem she'll only grab herself and not an underage intern.

Roseanne for mayor...for real!

It's fitting they cast a crazed loon to play Portland's mayor..
