Speaking from experience, I'm not surprised that Verizon had such issues with this. After all, spending your day watching cat videos at Verizon is a perk reserved solely for upper management.

TTR, you may want to re-read the article, according to which Verizon was not the employer.

The guy deserves a promotion. His job looks to be over, since now the company can just bypass him, but he seems like a valuable employee to me.
They'll probably not see it that way. Don't rock the boat.
