It's 4 a.m. in the parking lot at the Gresham Shari's
With a dateline like that, you just know the story is going to be a humdinger.

My 4am breakfast spot back in the day was The Hotcake House at 10th and Powell. An eclectic group of local partiers, tired band members, and unlucky singles trying to grab some breakfast before the sun started to rise. There was no violence that I can ever recall. Different times I guess. I actually stopped in about a year ago, and the old place was surprisingly much the same.
I've always considered Shari's more of a top-shelf kind of 3 am joint. Something like this I would expect at a Denny's. In high school, a friend was jumped at the Carrows off of 82nd and Powell - and that was only at like 10p. What a fine place that was.
I'm sure the Hotcake House is frighteningly unchanged since the last time I was there. That was probably 20 years ago.

I enjoyed a few hockey pucks there myself.
In my New Jersey days, we haunted many a White Castle, and there was even something called Blue Castle.
Down south, we noticed quite a few Waffle Houses, which seemed like the same kind of joints. 3 a.m. joints.

...top-shelf kind of 3 am joint
Well, it was a Mercedes that was involved, after all.

Best kind of these places, no matter where you are in the country, is where the waitress calls everybody "hon" regardless of their gender...
