Portland government is animals' enemy

We've got the Port of Portland pushing relentlessly to pave over scarce wildlife habitat for another useless shipping terminal. Now we've got Portland Metro government in bed with a sleazy elephant carnival show in California. And of course, the boys and girls at OHSU continue to torture monkeys for a megabuck or two. It's amazing that in an über-liberal enclave like Portland, the Goldschmidt Network can get away with ruthlessly trashing the birds and the bees for fun and profit.

As we well know, über-liberal Portland has been a carefully managed perception since Vera took office.

I think Goldschmidt actually started it.

Yeah...All those screaming uber-liberals like Mildred Schwab, Frank Ivancie and, of course, 'Sleeping with the Big O Editor' Connie McCready.

Yes, indeedy....crawling with uber-liberals.

This is 2012, not 1978. But your attitude is timelessly bad.

Like many Multnomah County government and "organizations", the Oregon Zoo makes back room deals, misappropriates funds & rails against anything or anyone who stands up to their scams. Multnomah County has to be one of the most crooked, corrupt & deceitful cities in the United States. Too many desperate people here. Corruption is the way here folks- been that way for too long and it's catching up with itself and will ultimately be it's undoing as a city. Missing stop signs all over the city but we continue to fund public "art". The list goes on. Oh, and yes, I have already made arrangements to move from Oregon. Been here long before the entitled ran everything into the ground. Will be wonderful to escape the delusional runaway scam that is Portland,Oregon. This city is high on it's own pipe dreams. Worst "Metropolitan City" in the US. Portland isn't a boys club, it's a losers club and if you're a winner, watch out, they will dismantle you at every turn. Logic and truth don't apply here.

Not to mention their experimentation on humans in Portland! (Streetcars, annexations, fluoridation, basic services neglect, deadly-force police follies, "mentoring," election riff-raff, pension schemes, bond-bloating, "listening sessions," bikemania, etc., etc., etc.)

Everybody wants....

Great comment Mojo, couldn't agree more. Too many in Portland who missed a few hugs. Everyone here wants to be on "stage", no one wants to be in the "audience". Not a nice place contrary to what many profess.

Sheila, I hear you. Today marks my fifteenth anniversary of moving out of Portland, and the place has, amazingly enough, only gotten more dysfunctional since I left. (Very tellingly, the best people I know in Portland are the folks I met only after I left.) Sadly, the city is resembling a hipster's apartment: lots of half-assembled toys lying around, an underlying stench from too many parties and an aversion to cleaning, and an appearance that says "Oh, I don't worry about this. When it really gets bad, I'll just have Mom come in and straighten up."

Mojo, was not Mayor Potter into "visioning" too? THAT really worked out well.

Too bad the vision is perpetrated by people who are congenitally blind!
Metaphorically speaking of course.
My family has been in Portland for over 100 years. We have owned successful businesses, we own property, and have raised our families here. During the last 25 years, I have witnessed the degradation of the city to the point where I hardly recognize the city in which I was born.
The street punks have taken over downtown, the pot holes get bigger and bigger, the taxes go up, and the corruption on the part of virtually every city official is so blatant as to be the norm rather than the exception. And the incompetence is staggering.
I am ashamed to tell people where I live.
Shelia is right....Portland is for losers!

godfry, I've been before Schwab, Ivancie and McCready (and add in every commissioner along with them and after). They may not all be uber-liberal, but in most part they were liberal except for Ivancie. And even he would suprise you on his liberal bent on some issues. We've had over 30 years of liberalism from fiscal to social issues. Now we are reaping it.

But what's worse we've had little common sense that should inhabit either liberalism or conservatism.

Jack, Jim Newman here in the communications office at OHSU.

I think your criticism of OHSU scientists is a bit unfair.

OHSU's primate center was indeed infiltrated by animal rights groups twice and the groups made claims of abuse...completely true.

But in both cases, extensive investigations by federal authorities cleared the center.

If you have questions about the use of animals in research I invite you to tour the center. We have public groups in all the time. They tell us they benefit from a chance to see what we do and ask any questions they may have.

If you want to take me up on my offer, I am at newmanj@ohsu.edu
