Never mind. Ran the lyrics thru Google. Steve Earle. He played Waylon on The Wire. That makes hip tops in my book.

This was in Steve's first life. He was about to go a little off the deep end with his demons. But he had beautiful visions, and thank the Little Baby, he made it back.
