Just enough for the city

As Oregon voters are again going to be asked whether we want a casino at the old Multnomah Kennel Club, here's a story about an almost-full-fledged casino operating at the Aqueduct race track in Queens, New York. The story's about Big Apple gamblers trashing machines on which they've lost money, but we didn't even know the casino had opened out there. They've come up with electronic versions of table games, like Baccarat, played with virtual cards; apparently hard copy playing cards aren't allowed there. The real winners are no doubt the casino operators, based in Malaysia, and the New York state government.

If the two gentleman that are pushing this think it's such a great idea, why don't they put in in their hometown of Lake O? Go to Reno or las Vegas and look at what hangs around casinos... There is no reason to subject Troutdale and Wood Village to that. Typical PDX attitude - Dump it in east County.

The whole NY thing has a seedy feel, and with the Malasian connection the creepy ramps up to criminal. Not that NY hasn't made the casinos and their owners feel welcome, but it's criminal how people prey on each other - for money.

We don't want it in LO either, thank you. It's an embarrassment that LO is the investors' home town.

I can understand why Nolo. Anyone else remember when the Oregon Lottery was created with just lottery and scratch off tickets? At that time, I *distinctly* recall a lady spokesperson (for the lottery) stating: "You will never, ever, see casinos in the state of Oregon." Yeah, right.

When I was hired as a police officer in '80 I recall being told how morally reprehensible gambling was - that is, until the government figured out it was a revenue source. Whats next? State sponsored crack houses and brothels?

The problem with middle age is that you're not quite old enough to forget things...
