"cc: Layoff coordinator"

You never know what you're going to find when you prowl around on the City of Portland website. Here's an interesting document that we just stumbled across. Think it will get used much in the planning bureau?

Any one with Policy in their job title is exempted.

You have to love Paragraph 3: "I want to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation ..."

... in this form letter.

So the only reason for a layoff is budgetary? Never for something like a declining work load or the position is no longer needed?

It also seems like fertile grounds for an employment lawyer. Was there truly a shortfall? Why was a non-represent employee where seniority is not the determining factor laid off rather than a peer? It would be crazy to not use job performance but the letter says otherwise...

Finally, those are quite a bit of copies. BHR personnel file, bureau personnel file, supervisor, etc.. At least one of those could be eliminated.

"Meanwhile, you may call your immediate supervisor/manager with any questions you may have regarding this impending personnel action. You can reach him/her at 503-823-[xxxx]."

No face to face announcement?

Bob Slydell: Well, just a second there, professor. We, uh, we fixed the *glitch*. So he won't be receiving a paycheck anymore, so it'll just work itself out naturally.

Bob Porter: We always like to avoid confrontation, whenever possible. Problem is solved from your end.
