Dumb Idea of the Week

Now there's talk of new baseball stadiums in both Hillsboro and Milwaukie. The Portland region, which never adequately supported one minor league baseball team, is now going to support two? Only government officials could be that dumb.

Are you suggesting there is only one dumb idea per week?

First one to build a stadium or arena wins!

Dumb and Dumber Part II

God, these guys have short (and selective) memories.

Didn't Glickman Jr and Mr Mary Nolan (Mark Gardiner) get Vera to throw $35M into PGE Park for a sure thing AAA team ?

That lasted one year. Then the team was lucky to pull in 4 digit crowds.

Well, at least they will have a reason (excuse) to build the light rail out there now.

Not so sure I agree with the naysayers on this one (a lot "naysayers" do read this blog, don't they)...I'd bet each team will likely be supported locally by both east and west-siders. There is just so much expense, parking probs, and so much other b.s. with going downtown that won't exist in the 'burbs, and they are so far apart, I think it might work.

I'd bet each team will likely be supported locally by both east and west-siders.

Seems highly unlikely.

The problem isn't the support of the teams. It's one or two governments going into debt, spending money they don't have and further reducing basic services.

The city did a fine job supporting the Portland Rockies, an organization run by a family who knew how to run a minor league baseball team. They were run out of town by Marshall "Three-times the A's will mean three-times the attendance" Glickman and Vera "I remember attending Dodgers games in Brooklyn" Katz. We haven't had competent ownership since. Hell, one previous owner went to jail for grand theft!

Two short-season A teams would do just fine here. There are more than enough fans around to fill each place. It would also be MUCH cheaper for the league to stick those franchises along the I-5 corridor rather than Central and Eastern Washington.
