Watch where you walk

The joy of nice weather is tempered somewhat by the thought of the darker sides of city life. A reader sent us this photo earlier in the week, along with a note:

This has been the fourth -- yes fourth -- hypodermic needle I've found in Portland since late October. I picked up and threw away the last one I found and told myself, "Never again." This was found at the Waterfront while biking near the Saturday Market next to bare-footed frisbee players and sun bathers.

This seems like a post-worthy picture to warn people of unsavory behavior to watch out for when walking in allegedly safe places.

He might want to participate in a resource mapping exercise to identify systems for energy, waste, water, food production and local economies.

That'll fix the problem.

Portland isn't known as "Smacktown" for nothing.

What's the matter? Isn't Portland living up to it's marketing?
You must be new.

I used to see a lot more spent syringes in the 80's. I haven't seen one in a long time but maybe I am not paying enough attention. I also walk through the waterfront on my lunch hour as far as the Steel Bridge almost every work day (though I keep off the grass).

I have a friend who works for Parks. Spends lots of time picking up needles in parks. Says the worst are the ones that would be good samaritans stick into the ground in an apparent attempt to bury them. Instead of helping, they're unwittingly making Punji sticks. Don't do that!

A lot of careless diabetics in town.

Must be a 24 HR Fitness nearby.
