You've been warned

If you're driving on close-in East Burnside in Portland on Wednesday at lunchtime, you'd better stop for that person trying to cross.

If they ran one of those at that location on Sunday at 10:30am and nabbed jaywalkers running over to brunch at The Screen Door, they'd probably be able to balance the entire city budget.

Drivers that (sic - should be "who") fail to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk and pedestrians that jaywalk may be issued a warning or citation by the Portland Police Bureau.

Then I assume the jaywalking pedestrians will also receive a citation for breaking the law? Attempting to jaywalk into a normal flow of traffic and causing a driver to brake unexpectedly will likely result in an automobile accident.

16.70.210 Must Use Crosswalks.
No pedestrian may cross a street other than within a crosswalk if within 150 feet of a crosswalk.

Oops, I think I misread that as:

Drivers that (sic - should be "who") fail to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk and (fail to stop for) pedestrians that jaywalk may be issued a warning or citation by the Portland Police Bureau.

My bad...

PDXLifer, that's crazy talk. Jaywalkers in Portland being punished for violating the law? Next thing you know, you'll be advocating busting cyclists for running red lights and screaming at peasants, er, pedestrians to get out of their way. Heck, expecting said jaywalkers to look both ways before walking out into the street, instead of strolling out like perfumed royalty and getting angry when they're nearly hit, is far too much to expect.

I'm all for busting drivers that don't stop when somebody is waiting at the crosswalk.

I'd like to see them do a jaywalker sting on the West side of the river...maybe near the courthouse. Might be interesting to see who gets cited.

I was stopped on Alberta, waiting to make a left turn (turn signal on) and almost got hit by a pedestrian who crossed the street at an angle. His head was turned to talk to someone behind him. Then he gave me the
"stink eye" as if I were in the wrong.

I was once ticketed in Portland for crossing against the light. It does happen, although I personally don't agree with Oregon law on this subject. Pedestrians should be allowed to cross if there is no oncoming traffic (except at blind curves or other intrinsically hazardous locations). It's almost always safer to cross against the light absent traffic than it is to wait for the light and deal with aggressive, impatient and/or inattentive drivers who don't yield the right-of-way before turning into a crosswalk. Cell phones have made this problem exponentially worse in the past decade. Virtually every close call I've ever had as a pedestrian occurred when I was legally in the right. Some of the scariest ones have involved police cars.
