As good as it gets

Jack Nicholson turns 75 today.

Where would we be without jack in three roles:

THE classic line (from Five Easy Pieces):

Robert Eroica Dupea orders some toast: "I'd like an omelet, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce. And a cup of coffee. Now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven't broken any rules."

Chacun a son gout.

IMHO, Nicholson has been phoning it in for 25 - 30 years. Every role he's done since then is the same character. He's like John Wayne - he plays himself, regardless of the movie . Nicholson is boring, and has been for a long time.

Your mileage may vary, but that's my take.

Fifteen years ago, Jack won the Academy Award for best actor for "As Good as it Gets." Was that the same character as "Anger Management" (2003)? Doesn't seem like it.

I think you're off-target there, too, Nonny. But, it reminds me of the report of the pre-production preparations and casting for "Superman" in which Brando (playfully?) insisted on playing Superman (Ka-El)'s father, Jor-El, as a disembodied voice emanating from an attaché case. Brrrr-ring!

Besides, John Wayne was superb in "The Shootist." Now, Redford, that's a guy who didn't really act like anyone other than himself in a movie. Some good movies in his portfolio, though, starting with "This Property Is Condemned" (1966).

Too bad Bob never picked up much craft from Natalie ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hCnQXMbOp8

Most of Jack's recent work doesn't appeal to me, but here are some great performances from the last 15 years:

The Crossing Guard

The Departed
