Slow fade
It's "Presidents Day," whatever that is supposed to mean. Lincoln's birthday was eight days ago; Washington's is the day after tomorrow. Today is... well, something. The banks are closed, and there's no mail.
We feel sorry for Lincoln and Washington, great men who led the nation in violent, revolutionary times. Their names have been blotted off the calendar. Now it's "Presidents Day," which for all the kids know might be in honor of Nixon or Fillmore or the Bush family. Martin Luther King gets better billing these days -- much better. Nobody had better dare make people work on his day.
At least Abe and George are still on the money.

I expect it won't be long until the 4th of July will be redefined by government employees (and those many pseudo government agencies) as "...the first Monday in July".
Followed closely as Christmas as "...the next to last Friday in December" which would make NYE, "the LAST Friday...".

Ain't it awful?

Bring back the traditional holidays...including Washington and Lincoln and let 'em occur on the day they're supposed to be celebrated not Mondays. Then again MANY (most?) people don't get those holidays or MLK unless they work for a bank, the Post Office or government. Do unions (private sector) get those holidays?

For some reason, Mt. Hood Commm. College had to choose between taking MLK Day off, or taking Presidents Day off. They took off MLK, and had classes today.
PSU also had classes today.

Taking away tradition works on many levels.
Cultural, spiritual,.....
Who knows how long Abe and George will remain on our money?

I liked it in the olden days when Honest Abe and I Cannot Tell a Lie Washington had their own days. Don't need to make a big holiday out of it--just take the time to remember why we honor each of them for their own contribution to our country. How hard is that?

Don't even get me started on Veteran's Day. Hard pressed to find a school or workplace that still takes that one off. Don't find many WA/OR schools that do.

Looks like I'm in the minority--for years I have been advocating that we move Presidents' Day to the day after the Superbowl.
And this comes from a guy whose birthday is on Feb. 12 as well.

Unless one lives in Illinois, I don't think too many places celebrated Lincoln's birthday with a holiday. And, like Brendan (happy B-day to you!), my birthday is on 2/12 as well, so I'll take any day off! Plus, when I was born my parents were living in a cabin on the St. Joe River in North Idaho.

Lincoln's Birthday was a holiday in New York and New Jersey when I was a lad.
