GEO runs the Tacoma detention center, as well as the majority of immigration detention facilties on the west coast, so I would expect them to get the nod to run Portland's.
What's most creepy about those facilities, like Tacoma, is that the immigration court is in the jail. You go through two checkpoints, some huge steel doors, and are then locked in the cell..er...courtroom.

Hmmm... interesting.
Makes one wonder if a city's leadership could have a business-related motive to deliberately run its finances into insolvency with one dumb project after another.
Nah, that can't be. They've must've just elected some really stupid people.

Mr. Grumpy, I've wondered that, too. Apparently Sam based the city's whole business plan on too many viewings of "The Producers".

Bad idea. So, naturally they're going to do it here. Put a bird cage on it.

That or they have turned into change agents leading our city towards privatization by strange decisions and more and more debt!
Think it began with Katz and her ubiquitous enthusiastic comments encouraging Public/Private Partnership...and it looks like city affairs have been "slipped away" until there is less and less for public to give and/or get and becoming more and more private and for Private!

Even though a private company could be operating the ICE Jail, the inclusion of ICE in the mix makes the Jail another entity in SoWhat not paying any property taxes to help pay down the $290 Million dollar TIF taxpayer debt. How nice.
ICE just adds to over 50% of the URA not paying any property taxes because of the abundance of non-profits, OHSU, PSU, OSU, UofO, Affordable Housing, TODs, etc. not paying any property taxes. The rest of us have to pay the debt. But soon there won't be any of the rest.
