The linked cutsey story again demonstrates that Oregonian reporterettes are functionally illiterate.
The story recites that the power outage was centered in the 97217 "area" code.
97217 is a zip code from the postal service. An area code is a huge area. 503, for example, covers about 1/4 of Oregon, overlapping with 971. 541 covers about 3/4 of Oregon.
Are there no longer editors at the Oregonian? What actually gets posted often demonstrates an amazing degree of functional illiteracy.

the area that was darkened was approximately along Alberta to north of Killingsworth, Missouri to somewhere east of Haight. Lots of folks came out of their darken houses and hung out in their front porches and yards. Some this area is pretty tough, but it seemed friendly and warm during the black out.
