Like Tonya Harding, perhaps something we'd rather not advertise...

"Like Tonya Harding, perhaps something we'd rather not advertise..."
Randy Newman is brilliant. We should advertise all the brilliance we can...no matter where he was born.

This is kind of (well, completely) off-topic, but did you know that Josef Stalin's granddaughter lives in Portland?
I read that in this article about the death last week of Stalin's daughter Svetlana.

Are you in L.A. today?
No, but in America.

Josef Stalin? Off-topic? Aren't you forgetting his big hit song, "I Love May Day"?
"Look at those missiles, look at those tanks,
look at those proletariat workers out there giving thanks
look at the Kremlin, there ain't nothing like it nowhere
From Siberia to the Ukraine
Down to Lenin's Tomb
There's not a better Red display,
I Love May Day."

They got little hands
Little eyes
They walk around
Tellin' great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet

Speaking of Stalin's daughter, when she lived in Princeton, some local guy developed a crush on her and had a local pizza parlor bake a pizza with the pepperoni laid out to form a hammer and sickle, which he left on her doorstep.
And around that same time one of Stalin's granddaughters became an avid fan of a punk rock band featuring a Princeton professor.

I was born right here November '43
My dad was a captain in the army
Fighting the Germans in Sicily.
My poor little momma
Didn't know a soul in L.A.
So we went down to the Union Station and made our getaway.
Got on the Dixie Flyer bound for New Orleans
Across the state of Texas to the land of dreams.
(etc., etc.)

Ray,
Good call.
"Louisiana 1927" sung by Aaron Neville after Katrina was one of the most moving moments of the entire tragedy in New Orleans.
I think my favorite Randy Newman lines are in the bridge of the song "Political Science" (also known as "Let's Drop the Big One Now") - where he discusses blowing up the world with atomic weapons and then says:
We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin', too

Thanks Jack, and all. It was a real nice way to spend the day in Portland, Oregon, on a lazy Monday afternoon in 2011.
