The greater concern is light rail giving access to neighborhoods that without the light rail, the dregs of society would never have access to anyway.
For example here in Fresno, CA, the middle class and above largely reside in the northern portion of the city. The largest gang concentration is in southeast and southwest Fresno. Central Fresno is in the process of gentrification around the Tower District, Fresno Community College, and the northern edges of downtown. The largest Black populations reside west of the 99 highway. I was talking to a handyman we hire for small projects around the house and he has told me that he has refused to service some neighborhoods west of the 99 because if you are White then you are a target for the children of burned out ex-Black Panthers.
I for one do not want light rail in Fresno mainly because I live close to the train tracks where they would put a station where thugs would depart to congregate and claim as gang territory, depart to clock houses to rob, and or depart to sell drugs.
Were any of you visitors to North Hollywood in the 1980's. At the time it was a fast decaying crack-infested urban slum. Would you prefer to get rid of the evil subway and go back to those days?

At least it represents ridership. Think of the getaway cars that aren't on the road because of this.

"I rob banks 'cause that's where the money is", so said Jesse James I believe.
