Blast from the past

They say that field burning is dead in Oregon, but outside in Portland right now, it sure smells like a good old-fashioned Willamette Valley grass burn. With easterly winds, though, it can't be that -- something else must be ablaze. A wildfire out the Gorge, or perhaps on Hood?

I actually miss that smell...

You must not like to exercise outdoors.

From Multco website:

Air Quality

The East of Sandy River Rural Area does not suffer from any major air quality problems at this time, other than those which generally afflict the entire Portland region. Issues have been raised regarding garbage burning, which is regulated by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Residential garbage burning is generally allowed in rural areas if the garbage does not include food, plastics, petroleum products, or toxic substances. DEQ acknowledges that their enforcement capability for burning violations is limited.

Given our new garbage collection rules, it's not too hard to imagine that Portland residents will be burning more garbage in their fireplaces than usual (if they have them). It's also not hard to assume there'll be more illegal dumping in out-of-sight areas. After all, despite whatever the dreamers want to believe, Portland is not San Francisco. We are surrounded on most of our perimeter not by water, but by wilderness.
