Hanford still a disaster waiting to happen
The culture up at the nation's worst nuclear waste dump, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation on the Columbia River in south central Washington, is notoriously corrupt. Has been for decades. But now it's not just the greenies calling them out for it. Check out this scathing report by the federal Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board on the big, porky waste treatment plant being built up there. When something unreasonably dangerous is going on at Hanford, it's made clear to workers that they have two options: hush it up or lose their jobs.

Same as it ever was. Hanford is nothing but a big hush money operation at this point -- so long as DOE keeps enough money flowing in to cover Pasco and Kennewick with McMansions and wineries, the natives won't be restless and the secrets stay buried. The multibillion dollar vit plant is an absolute pig in a poke, violating every rule of good engineering development. But that's ok, because when it fails on startup, the natives will suddenly have another fifty years of funding assured, which is all that really matters to any of them.

It's a bit ironic isn't it, that such an awful hazard is just up river and out of myopic sight from the self-proclaimed capital of sustainable and green?
