Why did the Oregonian write an explanation to Carole Smith? Is she involved in the political campaign? How does that square with her official duties?
Mark Weiner: "You mean our ad copy could be misconstrued as an endorsement from the Oregonian? Why, I'm as shocked as you are!"

Doesn't seem so unreasonable to me. The O turned down ad money because they thought the ad would misrepresent their position. Kind of a pleasant surprise.
