It's a coyote's life
A reader writes:
Spotted this fella this on the bike ride in this morning. Around NE 20th and Siskiyou. I doubled back and rode about two blocks alongside. He didn't seemed unnerved about me or the car traffic. Spotted him or a buddy a few months back on Regents, staring at a couple walking their newborn.

And small barky dogs.

Thank goodness to silencers so you don't wake up your neighbors!

Our Overlook coyote is cooler than this coyote. He/she eats only organic ducks and chickens.

Gibbles,
That's mean.

"That's mean."

Nope. Just the cycle of life. Somebody or something's gotta feed the coyotes. Sorry PETA, but I say "Better a yappy dog than a couple's newborn."

I think they're cute.
Now granted, I live in a rural area on 14 acres, and so I like to watch their little heads popping up over the tops of the brush.
Not so sure I'd like meeting them on the way to the garbage can in an urban area.
They're not going to predate on people, however, that's for certain, unless sick or injured, perhaps.

Toddlers look like prey because the tend to wobble when they walk.
So I don't think leaving your small child alone in the garden for ANY reason is a good idea with these creatures around.
The one you can see is probably not the only one around, or the closest to you.
The coyotes can be rabid and they can have distemper too.

portland native, exactly how many toddlers have been attacked in portland(or the surrounding areas including neighboring states, regions and time zones) have been attacked by coyotes???And you can go back as many years(decades) as you like. GET A GRIP......Also I'm as far as a PETA member as you can get
Sorry, meant to say as far FROM a PETA member as you can get

Will they jump a fence to get in my backyard to attack my dogs? I spotted some scat in my front yard now that I know what it looks like thanks to this blog.

Actually the correct term is "Small Yappy Dogs."
Posted by Abe | March 16, 2011 7:37 PM
I thought it was "yipey," rather than "yappy."

Actually if you google coyote attacks on people there are quite a few in California darting from back over the last 10 years, and as recently as last fall. There have also been attacks reported in New York state, Georgia and Canada. So it does happen.

"Mmmmm", said the Coyotes, "newborns!"

A coyote in SW Portland recently passed me on Canyon Road wearing rocket-powered skates.

Funny: I saw a roadrunner this morning while biking to work. Is today Chuck Jones's birthday or something?

Way to deal with that off-leash dog problem.

No it's not Chuck Jones' birthday, but I did learn that Mel Blanc ('the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester the Cat, Tweety Bird, Foghorn Leghorn, Yosemite Sam, Wile E. Coyote, Woody Woodpecker, Barney Rubble, Mr. Spacely, Speed Buggy, Captain Caveman, Heathcliff, [and] Speedy Gonzalez') graduated from Lincoln High School and got his first gig at KGW radio back in 1927.
