Countdown is on for mighty Peacocks
Our alma mater, St. Peter's College, takes the floor in a little while against the Purdue Boilermakers in the national men's college basketball tournament. The game, in Chicago, is set to tip off at 4:20 our time. It's a major longshot, but the boys from Jersey City have been known to pull the upset now and then. This one would be one of the biggest, if not the very biggest, in school history. Go Peacocks!
UPDATE, 6:44 p.m.: Ouch!!!

Since my parents met while attending Purdue in the 1940s, my heart belongs to the Boilermakers. Unless, of course, they're playing my Zags, who completed the trifecta of Denver upsets.

St. Peter's College was originally established in a section of Jersey City that was occupied by immigrants with money from Holland. The Dutch kept peacocks on their property, and they used to show up on the college campus with regularity back when the school was getting started in the 19th Century. Hence the mascot.
There is also a section of Jersey City named Pavonia, after "pavo," the Latin word for peacock. That's where the proud birds used to roam.
