George had a Portland connection in that he frequently played the Benson back in the days when other jazz greats rarely played here at all.

In 1964, I attended a George Shearing concert while in college. At intermission, they had a drawing for five newly released albums, and I won! After the five winning ticket stubs were selected, they promptly threw the winning stubs back in the jar.
Even though he had no way of knowing who had the winning tickets, I went up to an usher after the concert and told him I had won, and he gave me an album. I think there was a higher expectation of honesty in those days.
