Healthy vs. cool

Here's an interesting essay about urban economics. Condo bunkers ain't the answer, people.

Well, the last paragraph of that article pretty well sums it all up.

PDXL, to be specific:

"What really matters is what [towns] are producing. If all they’re producing is some kind of experience that induces people to come to town and spend money, it doesn’t matter how cool the town is; it’s probably not sustainable economically. If, on the other hand, the city is creating and exporting something the world needs – whether that product is cool or uncool – it’s a good bet that both the city and its people will do pretty well for a long time."

At this point, Portland's primary export appears to be its own mythology about itself.

JK: We are also exporting manufacturing businesses. Columbia Sportswear comes to mind.

We will be exporting a lot more with the Milwaulkie toy train’s kicking out 65 or so businesses totaling about 1000 jobs. Once forced to move, few of those will stay in perfectly planned, planner’s paradise Portland.

Thanks
JK
