Someone must have said something at the yacht club
Suddenly Gatsby Wyden's all worked up about Portland's teen prostitution problem. It's a disgrace, all right, but where has this fellow been on this issue for the last 30 years?

Not being on the Clinton wedding list, it would have been embarrassing for him to be seen anywhere in NY this weekend.

Glad to see Ronnie found something to keep himself busy between now an election day and then he can go back into hiding.
Must be pretty boring in NYC this time of year for him and the kids.

# 2 in teen prostitution. How many cops work this issue compared to drugs? How much has Cityhall done on this issue compared to streetcars, lightrail, plastic grocery bags and a number of other things?

Well, Cityhall/state gov has worked closely on this issue with various interns and other teens.

So, because Senator Wyden has not addressed teen prostitution previously, he should be attacked now that he has? I don't recall anyone else creating a public forum on this one either. At least we read the story...

This problem didn't happen overnight. Gatsby's interest in it, after 30 years in Congress, did.

To give credit where credit is due, Linda Smith (R-Battleground by way of Mars), elected to Congress in the class of '94 and one of the few of the Newtsters who could actually bring themselves to leave DC except under indictment, has been working on the sex slave thing for many years.
She was a horrific legislator and Congressional rep, but I'll give her this -- she believes in what she's doing and does her work to free sex slaves year in and year out without much press and for no remuneration as far as I know. The world would be a better place if more Christians walked the walk the way she does.

Prof. Jack, I'm reaching for my can of Cynic-B-Gon!! Who knows where this initiative could go if Sen. Wyden can get Neil Goldschmidt on board!!

Men of the Middle East often look upon Portland and its Youthful Diversity as being a greater draw than what Vegas.

Better late than never.
What made it worth noticing by the jet set is that it got on national TV. Everything we complain about here is just whining until some national TV show or the NYT picks it up. Unless you are the downtown biz association, that is, in which case, nothing, including basic civil rights, can keep you from getting what you want on the public's dime.
My fear is that the former ED of the Grey Panthers is going to come out with the blue dogs on cutting Social Security and pushing back the retirement age, etc.
Posted by dyspeptic | August 1, 2010 3:22 PM
What are the polls saying that he is concerned now?
Posted by clinamen | August 1, 2010 3:43 PM
dyspeptic..... If the ED of the Grey Panthers is aware of this...

Perhaps nothing to worry about... though I personally think govt bonds might be kind of worthless and getting more so with Paulson and his ilk effen around

So now Wyden comes out of hibernation and all you enablers are glad he took a position? Where has he been on this or any other issue of concern lately?
So now he's done his 10 minutes of face time and y'all are going to vote for him again..? Rome is burning folks... wake up.

Gatsby is drumming up issues because Huffman is almost at less than 10 points difference, according to some internal polling. It will be interesting to see how much money from both the demos and republicans pours into these two campaigns.

I believe Teen Prostitution is a top priority for the Adams Administration.
As in, "did you get his number"?
Posted by Mister Tee | August 1, 2010 9:13 PM
You know, it's sad, because it really doesn't matter about Huffman -- it's unfathomable how bad the D in this race would have to be to cast a vote to put Mitch McConnell in charge of the Senate. Wyden's a do nothing, but I'm definitely liking having Merkley in the majority, so Wyden will likely get my vote (and, thankfully, the vote of a majority of Oregonians).

When you are a reliable vote for an acknowledged "do nothing", you are part of the problem.
Posted by Mister Tee | August 1, 2010 11:46 PM
Aren't we all part of "the problem," or are you communicating from some higher plane that us mere mortals don't get to see. Sure, we're all part of the problem, but putting the GOP in power would only multiply the problem ten-thousandfold.

George A S...
You ARE the problem by not demanding more from our public representatives. Status quo....sure...that'll makes things better.

"We have met the enemy and he is us" POGO (one of the great old comic strips)

If his focus on the issue purely for political gain results in a viable alternative for at risk teens, I can live with his misplaced motives. I guess.

Six more years of Wyden?
Is that what we want? He comes around for election and then back to his elite club.
Is there an independent running?
Posted by clinamen | August 2, 2010 11:40 AM
Funny, I'm the problem for failing to demand more -- for demanding that the GOP put up people for leadership positions who aren't certifiably nuts. Wyden's long climb to mediocrity still leaves him many miles ahead of any politician who joins Sarah Palin's party. The GOP is a discredited organization that has purged almost every single person of conscience that it once had.
This guy says it better than I:

The discussion is not about party. Keep voting for these incumbents..we'll be canceling your votes too.
