More on the deadly Tri-Met accident

Outgoing agency chief "Crocodile" Hansen admits that the bus driver was way in the wrong when she mowed down five pedestrians with a green light in a crosswalk, and he releases an overall safety report from an outside consultant brought in after that horrifying incident.

"TriMet officials said the employment status of Day, 48, has moved from paid administrative leave to worker's compensation as they await the release of the official Portland police report. They declined to say why Day has applied for worker's comp."
Pretty special
She goes from killing two people, to paid vacation,(leave) to extended vacation (w- comp)?
Next stop permanent vacation (stress disability)?
TriMet's Unfunded Actuarial Accrued Liability (UAAL) for fringe benefits now totals $907.7 million.
To put that in comparison, TM’s total cost of payroll last year was only $136.5 million.
Long term debt: As of June 30, 2009, TM had $327,675 million in revenue bonds outstanding and $36,380 in GO bonds outstanding, for a total of $364,055 million. Of that, $96,928 was due within one year and has presumably been paid. After various other adjustments, the auditors state that the “net” long-term debt as of 6/30/09 was $273,088,000.
Keep in mind: paying off the $96,928,000 during the current FY was presumably one large reason why TM had to cut service in November and will cut service again in July. This is a legacy of previous light-rail construction programs.
Hansen is leaving TriMet in a catastrophic fiscal mess and will be patted on the back and slipped a huge check.

I'm just amazed that a bus driver kills 2 people in the course of doing her job, and only gets cited for traffic violations. But I'm pretty sure that if I killed a pedestrian or two on accident, I'm pretty sure I'd get brought up on manslaughter charges. Right?!?

And Trimet can’t even find the money to control its crime problem. After twenty years of promises to fix their crime problem, ( ortem.org) we find that the Trimet’s latest MAX light rail line caused a big crime increase at the Clackamas Town center while the rest of the county’s crime went down!

The Clackamas County Sherriff’s Office compared a 5 month period beginning on opening day with the same five month period one year earlier and found a 32% increase in reported crimes and a 56% increase in calls for police service.

Their spreadsheet is at: portlandfacts.com/lrt_crime.html

The KATU story is at: http://clackamas.katu.com/content/sheriff-blames-crime-increase-max-line

The Sheriff was interviewed on Lars yesterday (link on right side of screen in the interviews section): larslarson.com/

Thanks

"kills 2 people in the course of doing her job, and only gets cited for traffic violations."

Ya gotta love those union jobs.

Steve: the union has nothing to do with that - it's the power structure deciders in town making those decisions in their own interest. Think bigger. Mark's on the right trail.

"it's the power structure deciders in town making those decisions in their own interest."

Puh-leeze, every politician in this state is scared to death of displeasing public employee unions. Get real - Have you seen what PFDR gets away with?

Hansen to self: Kiss up, kick down.

BTW-Did you notice that when you roll your mouse over the picture it tells you

Great consultant!

Jeez Jack, your starting to treat me like Bob Richardson does!

RESPONSE TO FRED HANSEN'S LAYING THE BLAME ON SANDI DAY-BRUCE PEEK

First of all, it is TRIMET POLICY to accommodate courtesy stops for any passenger that asks after dark, she followed TRIMET POLICY COMPLETELY. Was there any way for her to look into the future to determine that this courtesy stop would not be safe?

Secondly, TRIMET POLICY is to scan all directions in and out during a turn. If she did that that it would mean that she would have had to take her eyes off the direction of travel. At that moment the pedestrians walked into the path of the oncoming bus but her eyes were away from the direction of the travel as prescribed by Trimet policy.

Thirdly, we have the issue of blind spots, they are not visual barriers, they are blind spots. Trying to diffuse the reality using language is an attempt by the company to shift blame from the management to the operator.

Finally, Fred is attempting to sway the accident review committee. This is nothing but a huge PR campaign to make sure the accident review committee gives the judgment that Fred wants.
They have purposely delayed taking the accident to the review committee in order to give themselves time to make up the committees mind for them so they can get the judgment that they want, which is full blame on the operator and none on the company.

(Maybe this will be more acceptable)
