Nothing burns like paper

The Great Northwest Bookstore, a venerable old joint under the aerial tram between Front and Barbur in Portland, has been destroyed by a three-alarm fire.

This is a terrible loss to Portland - My heart goes out to Phil, John and all the fine people who made the Great Northwest a wonderful spot to buy a book, or just stop by for intelligent conversation in a cozy atmosphere. We were concerned a decade ago when they moved from the old place on 11th (?) and Stark, but the old Church was even better - this is awful.

That's terrible. I never knew about this place. And the loss of rare books is a true loss indeed.

Me neither. I remember the downtown store (where American Apparel is now) but never knew they moved to Corbett-Terwilliger. I always thought they had simply gone out of business. Damn.

ok, did I miss something? The Oregonian article says the first alarm was 2:12pm, but at the top it says the article was posted at 1:03pm?
