This man is a genius. The world weariness of this performance is palpable. Wow.
Paul Simon also contributed two lines of lyric to Leonard Bernstein's play "Mass". The lines are "Half of the people are drowned and the other half are swimming in the wrong direction. Half of the people are stoned and the other half are waiting for the next election".
And Bernstein continues "They call it Glorious Living"

Other Paul Simon lyrics that are sad but nevertheless have the cold ring of truth: "She said, 'why don't you love me for who I am what I am where I am.' and I said, 'because that's not the way the world is, Baby. This is how I love you Baby.'"

"I'm tired -- 900 situps a day -- I'm painting my hair the color of mud... Who's gonna love you when your looks are gone?"
But then comes the answer: "God will, like he waters the flowers on your windowsill."

"'because that's not the way the world is, Baby. This is how I love you Baby.'"
From one of the most criminally underrated albums anyone ever recorded. I saw Paul and his band in '99 or '00 or so, touring on the same bill as Dylan, at the Rose Garden. Astounding, outstanding concert from an amazing songwriter.
