Why would they note the previous marriage of the guy ended in divorce?

That's standard at The New York Times. They do it in obituaries, too.

I had exactly the same thought, Robert.
If they're going to mention his previous marriage, why not tell us whether or not the bride is still a virgin.
I think her GPA would also be relevant given all the latin honors he received.
