Blood for oil

That trade, it seems, will never end.

Au contraire, monsieur, the end of that particular bargain is in sight. The generation of kids in elementary school will live in a very different world than current adults grew up in.

(long but worthwhile)

Oh yes, Peak Oil!!! Any day now... wait, within a few years... o.k., maybe in another 50 years or so... wait,...

Meaning what? When oil is at the peak, there is as much oil as there will ever be, so we would not expect to see any big change (other than price volatility). When price quadruples but extraction volumes remain essentially fixed, does that not suggest that we have seen the peak and are entering into the period in which there will be less and less easy oil to be had?

I'm guessing that peak oil is contaminated for you in part by its association with City of Portland (the Peak Oil Task Force) -- but you can rest easy there. The task force report has already disappeared under a thick layer of dust and might as well be only a legendary tale at this point. Fireman Randy is busy shoveling money at biofoolish fantasies with Gov. Ted and the liberals lined up behind him, all pretending that the current energy relationships will continue forever.
