Breaking news: Schrunk lets killer cop slide

If that isn't the nonstory of the century.

My sympathies to Mr. Chasse's family.

Odd juxtaposition of timing here.

Sam Adams gets kid glove treatment from the CoP police because of who he is, to the extent that the officer at the scene calls his sergeant to ask advice, and the sergeant shows up and dutifully sits in his car so he can report that he sees no evidence of impairment. Case closed.

James Chasse gets beaten to death by the CoP police because of who he is, and the entire justice system ignores compelling evidence of the beating and stands primarily by a shaky story from the officer involved.

Schrunk ought to hang his head in shame.

Wow, seriously? I had to check and make sure I was at the right website. Sounded like an Indymedia post there for a minute.
You really believe the police are out there targeting homeless people to beat up?
In Portland?

Astute observation, John.

John, Not all Portland police officers are bad, but Schrunk does let the bad ones, and other, white collar, bad guys, slide.

I wish our AG would investigate him and his connections, but he will need a very strong heart and mind to do it, because it is an unspeakably ugly mess that some of us have only glimpsed.

The second john should be Jon.

That's not what I said. The phrasing "because of who he is" refers to the fact that, once it was established that Chasse was unarmed and posed no threat to the officers at the scene, there appeared to be no allowance for the fact that he was mentally ill and would say and do things that normally might be considered inappropriate. Police are trained for this situation, and should have made allowance.

And I'll stand by my phrasing "CoP police", as opposed to, say, "Officer Humphreys", because there were police witnesses present when he was beaten. That moves it out of the realm of a single lone officer losing it and acting out - anyone there could have stepped in and taken him aside to cool off.
